What Is an E-Stamp Paper?
E-Stamp paper (Electronic Stamp Paper) is a digitally issued instrument used to pay stamp duty on legal documents. It replaced traditional physical stamp papers in most Indian states and union territories, including Pondicherry (Puducherry), as part of the government's effort to eliminate fraudulent stamp papers and simplify the stamping process.
E-Stamp papers are issued by authorised collection centres (ACCs) of the Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited (SHCIL) and carry a unique Certificate Reference Number (CRN) that can be verified online at any time. This makes them tamper-proof and legally robust.
In Pondicherry, virtually all documents that attract stamp duty under the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 and the Puducherry Stamp Rules require E-Stamp paper - including rental agreements, sale deeds, power of attorney, gift deeds, affidavits, indemnity bonds and partnership agreements.

Why E-Stamp Duty Must Be Correct
Incorrect or insufficient stamp duty has serious legal consequences:
- Inadmissibility in Court - An under-stamped document cannot be admitted as evidence in any court until the deficit duty and penalty is paid.
- Penalty - The Stamp Act imposes a penalty of up to 10 times the deficit stamp duty on instruments found to be under-stamped.
- Unenforceability - Banks and government offices may reject under-stamped documents.
Our advocate calculates the correct stamp duty before procurement - so your document is legally sound from the start.

E-Stamp papers generally do not have a fixed expiry date, but it is best practice to execute your document on the same day or within a few days of obtaining the E-Stamp paper. The document's date should ideally match or follow the E-Stamp paper's issue date. Using an E-Stamp paper for a document dated much later may create technical legal issues.
